KOSMIC's debut
KOSMIC debuted on June 11, 2019 with their song 'KOSMOS' and a breathtaking, space-themed music video set in a future where humanity has departed Earth and colonized the rest of the galaxy. The video features the members of KOSMIC in various places, living lonely lives—until finding one another.
When the video was released, fans were intrigued by the concept, and the 'KOSMOS' video gained 13 million views in 24 hours—an impressive feat for a debut artist, even one from the successful company CKM Entertainment. The group went on to get two music show wins for their debut effort.
Despite this success, others complained that the concept was not original. The group was accused of plagiarizing their senior group EXO, even though the EXO members are aliens in their concept, while KOSMIC members are (mostly) human. There were other issues, such as netizens criticizing the use of an infinity symbol in the fan slogan "7+U=∞" (the group INFINITE uses the infinity symbol as their logo), and accusations of plagiarism of the boy group ASTRO and girl groups LOONA and WJSN (Cosmic Girls) with the similarity of KOSMIC's name and concept. Once these plagiarism rumors had spread and piled on top of one another, the group experienced several black oceans (in which anti-fans turn off their light sticks, creating a dark and silent audience) at their last several music show debut performances.
As a result, the group's leader, Changmin did an interview explaining the intention behind KOSMIC's concept: set in a future where humanity has left Earth but continues to exploit natural environments on alien planets due to capitalism and greed, "our concept is meant to comment on the way that humanity currently exploits the natural world, and all of the suffering that occurs as a result," he said. "Our group members find each other and fight for a better future. We hope that others can connect with this message and join us in working for that better future."
He also explained what the group name KOSMIC means: "It's a reminder that although you may feel small, when we work together, we can achieve anything. We can touch the stars."
